2/18/2010/ More newspaper silliness

Read all the court activities. Found out that if you go into foreclose they also carry it in the papers. All the details including your full name and the bank you owe the money to. Remind me to pay my mortgage in time.

I scaned this just for you!
Now did you read this ad. They reward you with a turkey if you hit a deer. Are they nuts? Of course you have to repair your car at this place. So you hit a deer. You have to report it to the police (so they can report it to the newspaper). Michelle made sure David knew this after she read the DMV booklet for her drivers test here in Ohio. So anyhow after you report it you get to keep the deer. Then you go to this car repair place and you also get a free turkey. So make sure you have only slight damage to your car. Now count your blessings because you get a free turkey and half an year free meet from your deer. And with a bit of luck you might just need only a new head light. This might just turn into the newest way to hunt. No more sitting outside in the cold and freeze and wear silly camouflage outfits but just wait till after sunset and then go on the road. The deers are every where. As the police report shows there are an average of 2-3 deer hits per night. Lucky guys!

To change the subject. We are surrounded by auctions. Within a 50 mile radius there are about 5-10 auctions per day and on Saturdays about 20-30. Next Saturday is a high school auction that is, the whole inventory of the high school, which will be torn down, is for sale. Hundreds of old fashion school desks, the principals desk with flag staff and flag, old globes, wall maps, chalk boards, library book cases, science exhibitions and equipments, home ed sewing machines and kitchen outfits, gym lockers and gymnastic mats and just awesome stuff. Hope I can talk David into going.
Anyway, as soon as we are finished setting up house we will start to go to those auctions. I think that that will be my new hobby. Let me know if you look for something specific!

Okay, got to go and shop for fruit trees online. Spring must be coming since we had today the first day above freezing.

2/14/2010/ catching up

Trina taking a nap on our bed. We are still sleeping on the floor! Notice her dog bed next to our bed being empty!

David laying floors in the Living Room.

Stripping that dark ugly wall paper of the dining room wall took David two days. That stuff was a nightmare to remove.

Frozen water spill on our dam.

Today's sunset.
It is cold but we have sun for a few hours just about every day. It might snow and fifteen minutes later it is sunny. But yes, very, very cold. Like 17 degree just right now!

Friends, I have a lot of catching up to do. Since we are here we have hired a girl who totally painted the whole house! Her name is Kris and she has become an instant friend. She is a single mom who raised her boy by herself. Very, very hardworking girl. We do a lot of teasing and she has a great sense of humor. It took her a month to paint this house but she also works in the night as a care giver to an older couple. Tough girl I say. It became a habit that she would come in the morning after her care giver job and eat breakfast with us and I also would make her eat lunch with us. Have to take care of that woman since she hardly takes time to eat. As soon as she found out that I am big into healthy food she brought me this fungus which we then put into a half a gallon of strong black tea and let it sit for 7 days. It is supposed to changes the tea into this health drink which should be good for your digesting system. Every week we would set up what I called our witches brew and the first batch turned out pretty good. The second batch tasted funny and the third one was gross. We don't know what went wrong but we decided that our experiment failed.

We also had that ugly, ugly wall with those niches rebuild and now it is ready to accommodate a wall unit I ordered from Costco which will be delivered next Friday.

Then my dear people, David laid the hardwood floors for the whole house, about 2000 sqft of floor and he did a supper duper job. He still has the master bedroom to go but has to wait till the guys in the master bath are done laying the tiles. That should happen tomorrow.
Meanwhile I am battling the utility companies, TV set up, Internet and such things.
Now listen to this. Ordered the daily newspaper. Nice, the service was to start the next day. So went out at about 8am, no paper; went out again at 9am, no paper; 10am still no paper. Well lo and behold at 3pm the paper was delivered... so we get the daily news at 3pm...old news by then. The newspaper people probably come to work at 8:30 or 9am then sit together with a cup of coffee and read some of the other counties paper and maybe one bigger paper for national news. Then they decide which article they want to copy and which national news the want to use for that one national column. Meanwhile the Sheriff and Court report will have arrived for the most exiting news of the day! Then they will warm up the machines and are ready by noon to print. And oh miracle by 2pm the paper is ready to go and you get it by 3pm. And we used to complain in San Diego if the paper was not on our door step at 7am though we used to hear the paper guy throw the paper at our house at 5am. Welcome to the slower pace of the Midwest. Then of course there is no paper on Saturday because they already have to start printing the Sunday paper on Saturday and oh my gosh, you get the Sunday paper at 9am, how exiting!
Oh and then the news you read in the paper. Every day there is the Sheriff report with who did what complete with name of the person and address where they live. Also who hit a deer that night and the damage to the car!!! Then the daily court report with who went into foreclosure, who got divorced, who was in court for rape, spousal abuse and or bounced a check always with name and address. No privacy in this town that's for sure. Keeps you straight though because you sure don't want your name in the paper for all to read what the heck you did. Oh then there is also who sold a house and the name of the buyer! Yep, we all are informed what is going on here!

Then there is the Internet! One gigabyte my friends and that is what they call "high speed". If David, who is notorious for watching YouTube videos send by his buddies, opens one of the video links my computers Internet comes practically to a screeching halt. So thanks to the phone company we have "high speed" Internet which works most of the time but then the phone is an other subject because it is very sporadic in its job. It was down for 2 weeks the up for 2 days and now down again. Though thanks God I have hooked up Vonage for years which runs over the Internet so we are still reachable (if the Internet works that is). That also allows us to keep our San Diego number and also have a virtual Ohio number so nobody has to pay long distance to talk to us. And then of course we still have our cell phones with the SD numbers.

TV is another story. The phone company decided no TV for us so we had to go for Satellite TV. So far so good though they warned us that a good snow blizzard might take down the signal. No blizzard yet and I can actually watch the morning news which makes the newspaper obsolete except of course I want to keep the paper just to be informed who ran over a deer last night and how much damage it did to his car. And of course you never know if your neighbors name will show up in the paper because he bounced a check!!!
Talking about neighbors. We are really blessed with having awesome neighbors. Bruce on the right has himself attached to David and checks almost daily on our progress. He also has a barn full of cool equipments like tractors and stuff which David is truly jealous of. Every time we have a few snow flakes he is cleaning his and also our drive way and garage and barn entry. So he went last week to the Bahamas on vacation with his family and of course just then we have this big snow storm. Our drive way was buried a foot under snow and Kris couldn't leave to go to the store to get more paint because her wheels are spinning and she buries herself about another foot into a snow drift. Here comes the other Bruce from the left on HIS tractor (left neighbor and right neighbor both are Bruces) and tells us that Bruce from the right called him from the Bahamas and asked him to clean our drive way because he can't do it and we don't have a tractor. Now this my friends are our new neighbors. Unbelievable. And Bruce from the left apologizes to David that he doesn't handle his tractor to well because he is a city slicker. He lived all his live in Defiance our little town of about 16000 citizens (the whole county has 33000 people) and he calls himself a city slicker. David almost choked so he would not laugh but assured Bruce that he is doing a mighty fine job cleaning our driveway!!!
People, living here is quite an adventure. We love it here but there is ever so often a bit frustration lifting its ugly head. We still need to learn to slow down and not take our self so important. But yeah, it is funny sometimes how we see our self and others.
Now that I caught up a bit I will get in the next postings a bit more into the details of country living. Hope that you stay with me on our journey to become farmers in Ohio! I might not write every day put a couple of times a week or more for sure.
Thanks for the kind remarks and keep on reading!

1/13/2010/ Ah, all my belongings here!

Empty!!!
Mostly spent the day unloading and lining cabinets. Those poor men started to run out of places to put boxes. We had the barn almost full, the garage and the sun room stuffed. Boxes, everywhere boxes. We couldn't put up any furniture because we still had the place painted, the living room wall torn out, a door punched through the wall from David's office to the sun room and all new wood floors replacing the carpets. There was carpet every where even in the master bath room. I have an aversion to carpet since David just doesn't take his shoes off in the house and Trina sheds hair every where. Just so much cleaner to have wood and tile floors. Later our friendly neighbor Bruce and his wife joined us for a dinner at a nearby food shack on an insider tip. Great food and great company. Bruce is so nice and helpful. Comes over every day to see if he can help and giving good advise for us city slickers. He is retired and I think really happy to have David as neighbor because he loves boating on the river and can hardly wait to get on the river this spring with David. His wife still works and i think the poor guy is just bored. So having another boating fan as neighbor makes his day.
While we were gone Michelle packed for her next day return trip to Germany. Sad to see her go though she must have been happy to go home to relax. Not much vacation for her on this trip. But at least she got to eat all the junk food she so craved!

1/12/2010/ Another busy day

Ugly red wall with niches

Ugly dark bathroom reminding me of a cave...
....and ugly dark dining room belonging in a castle but not in a country home (that is of course just my humble opinion) some people thought this rather a classy house

The moving van arrived early today and David and Michelle started to unload though we had some help hired for tomorrow. Ah, how wonderful to see our stuff arriving! Then we had a girl coming to give us a bid on the paint job which meant to paint the whole house because I just couldn't live with all those dark colors in the house. Michelle and I picked some cheery colors, a bright yellow for the guest hallway, guest room, kitchen, living room, master bathroom and my upstairs work shop. Then there was a crisp spring green for the laundry room, dining room, guest bathroom and library and a soft orange for David's office, entry hall and master bedroom. We also had a contractor give us a bid on totally redoing that ghastly red wall with the bright white niches. Yuck!
Later we went back to the DMV because Michelle really needed that drivers license before her returning to Germany in two days. She passed with flying colors and got her license right then and there. On we went to pick up our Church benches at the antique store. I had a hard time prying Michelle away from all that awesome good stuff. Then on we went to Loewe's to buy a washer and dryer since my great pair went with our house as part of the settlement. So got to get me a brand new pair.
I was exhausted by know but after a hearty dinner Michelle and David decided to go and see the movie Avatar since Michelle wanted to see it before her return to Germany.
I had it and dropped the two off at the movie theater to go home and have a nap, then returning in ice and snow to pick them up again.

1/11/2010/ First day in our new home

Michelle agrees with the "Pie fixes everything" sign

She also admired the healthy eating habbits here like Hillbilly Bread and rows and rows of white sponge bread

David and I went to Napoleon which is about 20 minutes from us, where we stored our motor home. We went to get the mattress off the bed there and also got the dishes, pots and pans and other necessities to get us by till the moving van arrives. Thanks good there was also a coffee maker and coffee and canned food.
When we returned Michelle was already busy lining the kitchen shelves and making house!
Off we went again to the DMV because Michelle needed a Ohio licence which she can convert in France to a french license without taking the test. They don't accept California licenses for conversion, wonder why. Well the DMV was closed so on we went to the "Fifth Third Bank" (what a name!) to open bank accounts for all of us, then to the tourist office to get informed about where to get TV hook up, Internet, telephone, trash pick up, news paper and so on. We feel like we are on another planet, there is nothing familiar here! Though everybody is so helpful here and they spend their time to explain things and make you so welcome, very refreshing! Then we went to the antique store to pick up our church benches we bought on our last trip, but again, they were closed. Mind you, most small businesses close here at 5 pm. Very new to us for sure. So went home to continue lining cabinet shelves while David was shoveling the snow around the house. FUN!

1/10/2010 / HOME!!!

David draging me over the threshold with Trina's help

Us checking out deer tracks

We made it. I can't believe it, this is my new home!

We arrived at about 3:30 pm and opened the door to our new home! WOW, unbelievable and very strange to think that we will be here for good. There is not much snow on the ground and it is around 35 degree, rather cozy!

Got unloaded and then went grocery shopping. The heater was turned on earlier by our friendly neighbor Bruce. He then came over and explained us how things work since he was the one who was maintaining the house for the last year and a half while it was up for sale. It was also his best friend who lived here and actually built the house. As he explained, he was also helping during construction. Thanks god, he knows the ins and outs of this house because their are several unknowns for us like the heat pump heating with propane back up, water pump who gets the water out of the pond (our water source), and all the different components of the water filtration system....and on and on! Phew, we ARE in the country!

We rolled our mattresses out and all had a miserably sleep, us because we are to old to sleep on the naked floors and Michelle because her room doesn't heat correctly!

But she LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVES our house. I am glad because I started to have doubts about doing the right thing. Well here we are to stay!

1/9/2010/ Getting closer, Yeah!

Lebanon school bus

Had a good night sleep in a nice hotel and Michelle loved the breakfast buffet with a waffle machine. As I mentioned before, food was very important for Michelle on this trip!!!
Stopped in a town I had marked on my map from our previous trip for the antique store I remembered. There was this lovely red table with an enamel top and 4 red chairs I really wanted. I wouldn't know how to take it with us if they still had it (probably tie it on top of the kayak) but darn, it was gone. So we drove across the freeway to this knife outlet store and Michelle bought Bilal this really cool pocket knife and had his initials engraved. Very cute. We also had to take a bunch of pictures for Bilal because we drove through the town of Lebanon! Funny enough there is a Lebanon just in about every state we crossed. A very popular name!
On we went and drove till 11pm since we all felt pretty good today and started to feel the pull of Ohio! We made it to Effingham, Illinois today, close to HOME!

1/8/2010/ Snow!!

Woke up to a snowy countryside. Locked beautiful but it was COLD! Loaded the TV up again, then the rest of our stuff and on we went. Michelle at this point had it down to a science to pack my car just right to fit everything in including the few plants we hauled along and filling every inch. She also felt better today and took over the wheel in the afternoon. I drove yesterday all the way so she could get some rest but today she wanted to drive again. She does enjoy driving since she doesn't has a car in Germany. I am the designated navigator on this trip! We stopped at a mall for a desperate potty break and raced into a "Big Buy" for relive. David waiting for me was chatting with a clerk in the TV department and asked if in this cold weather we needed to unload the TV in the night. The clerk assured us that it was okay to leave the TV in the car even in freezing temperatures unless you would leave it in their for several days. But he insisted that the LCD will not freeze! Yeah! How nice not to have to unpack the whole car to get to the TV which was wedged between boxes and blankets in my to the last inch filled car.
The trailer was running just fine too and with no further problems we arrived in Oklahoma City for the night. This was a good day for sure!

1/7/2010/ More brown, flat, boring drive and some exitment!

Left Demming, New Mexico, passing by a funny little town named "Truth or Consequence". Wonder how this town got this name! Went on our way following Davids truck and little trailer with the kayak. David was worried all the way because the trailer has just those tiny wheels and he and Dan put new bearings on just for the trip plus David had a pair of spares with him.
Well you guessed it. Suddenly Michelle and I started smelling burned rubber, then we saw something flying of the right trailer wheel and then smoke coming from that wheel. We radioed David to stop and being in the middle of the city of El Paso (Texas) in high traffic we had to pull on a barely existing emergency lane. David got out and checked the wheel and decided to pull on to the next exit.
In 30 miles winds and freezing temperature we started to unload the kayak, the weight set weights (David put on the trailer to keep it from bouncing) and boxes of rocks from Morocco we couldn't fit into the moving truck anymore. Then the fun begun with taking of the wheel, digging in the truck for the grease gun, repacking the bearings and putting everything together. By then we all where frozen stiff and Michelle already having a sore throat in the morning came down with a full blown cold. Oh how much fun it is to move!
About 2 hours later we were back on the road. David stopped about ten minutes later to check if the wheel got hot but it seemed okay. On we went. About an hour later David stopped again to check and....you guessed again..., the wheel was hot, hot, hot!
Here we repeated the whole shebab again, unloading the Kayak, the weights and boxes of rocks! Taking the wheel off and ding, ding, ding all the little balls rolled out of a practical worn down to nothing bearing housing! Just a bit of metal scrapping left. So David started again in freezing weather with a windchill factor of about 10 degree to put the new bearing on with plenty of grease which covered by now also our clothes and everything. Another couple of hours later we were back on the road and made it with no more problems to our next stop in Odessa, Texas.
Arriving at a motel we unpacked our stuff and since it was freezing out side and Greg, David's brother advised us to take the huge LCD TV out of the car so it wouldn't freeze, we also hauled that monster out of my car.
Michelle was meanwhile miserable with her cold but after we all including Trina piled in my still filled to the top Xterra and went to have a delicious Mexican dinner, she felt a bit better! All the way on our journey she was out for American junk food to get all she can before returning to Germany.
